Gold Fever

The story of this modern company begins with Frank Olah. A watchmaker/ jeweller by trade in Hungary, he arrived in Melbourne in 1957. Although he began working for his brother-in-law Peter Burany (whom he had originally trained in Hungary), Frank's dream was to have his own business again. He began by importing a chain-making machine from Italy. After working for his brother-in-law all day, he began crafting and assembling beautiful chains in a converted bedroom at home during the evening. The whole family, his wife Elizabeth and three daughters Eva, Liz, and Esther, participated.

Frank's business expanded and in 1967 Olah chains Pty Ltd was formed. By now he had 12 chain-making machines producing many different styles of links in 9ct gold, 18ct gold, and sterling silver. Frank supplied many retail jewellery stores Australia wide with his stunning necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

In 1970 Steve Koreny joined the company as a young apprentice. He also happened to be engaged to Frank's youngest daughter Esther.

The business continued to grow. Olah Chains moved to larger premises in Greeves Street St Kilda in 1978.

Andrew Hende joined the company in 1984 as a 16 year old apprentice. He had long desired to be a jeweller after a visit to Peter Burany with his father at the age of five. Peter engraved the tiny boy's name on a piece of copper and Andrew became instantly enthralled. One day he would be able to do that too!

In 1987 Frank retired. Steve with his wife Esther formed Halo Jewellery Pty Ltd. Andrew remained with the company. During the next fifteen years they expanded their work to include handmade antique reproductions in rose and yellow gold, among them a large range of rings and individual, unique designs. Their modern and antique style jewellery supplied many well known stores in the trade. In 2002, after so many years of wholesale jewellery manufacturing, Steve, Esther and Andrew decided to present their beautiful craft direct to the public. Gold fever was born.
